“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam.” – Democrat and Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, Norwalk, Connecticut, 2008
“When we returned, we saw nothing like this.” – Richard Blumenthal, 2003, Bridgeport, Connecticut, during a rally to support troops.
Regarding the first quote, Mr. Dick said he misspoke. He doesn’t remember the second quote at all.
Misspoke? Really?
I served in the military for 21 years between 1982 and 2003 and never ever mentioned participating in the invasion of Grenada, Panama, the Desert Shield, Dessert Storm, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc.
I watched Desert Storm unfold on television while playing cribbage and drinking Manhattans with my roommate. I was on a ship that steamed toward Grenada with the intent of getting in on the action, but it was over when we were still a few hundred miles away.
There’s a big fucking difference between serving in a war or conflict, and serving during a war or conflict. I’ve never personally known a veteran to misspeak like Dick recently did.
Way to go, Dick. There’s no weaseling out of this one.

In the first article I saw about this, the term he used was "misplaced words." WTF does that mean? Maybe he means "I said 'Viet Nam served I in' -- I didn't say 'I served in Viet Nam.'"
This is the best euphemism for lying since Richard Nixon's spokesman admitted that he'd been lying through his ass about Watergate for the past few months: "All previous statements on Watergate are inoperative."
Served 21 years myself with 4 active duty army and 17 National Guard. Never got close to combat and to hear Blumenthal speak made my stomach turn.
Tom: Misplaced. Nice. One day politicians will realize a lie is a lie, no matter what you call it.
Beach Bum: My girlfriend, a 20yr AF veteran, and I couldn't fathom how anyone could say something like that by mistake. All things added up - the guy is just another flake trying to make himself bigger than he actually is.
